India is gearing up for the independence week so does the film industry with its latest release Gadar 2. The iconic hand pump is back on the big screen after 22 years as sequel to Gadar: ek prem katha of 2001 which broke many records back then. Gadar narrated the frictional story of love between Tara Singh (Sunny Deol) a truck driver and Sakina (Ameesha Patel) who saved her during the painful partition riot of 1947 in Punjab. Sakina lives happily with Tara Singh and her son Jeete until she finds out the family members are alive back in Pakistan. She goes back to see her family but her father (Amresh Puri) did not let her leave Pakistan. Tara Singh along with his young son Jeete goes to Pakistan and fights the Pakistani army to get the mother of his son back in India. It became another iconic film for Sunny Deol’s career in the patriotic spectrum of his filmography.
Gadar 2 is the sequel of the story after 17 years defines the father-son bond beyond the border where hatred refuses to die down between India and Pakistan and the cloud of war always looms at large. Infuriated by the killing of 40 army personnel by Tara Singh during a visit to get Sakina back to India, Pakistan Major General Hamid Iqbal (Manish Wadhwa) lurks for the opportunity to take revenge from Tara Singh. Back in India, Sakina and Tara Singh live happily where his son Jeete is now a collage student. Tara wants him to be studious to have a better future, unlike him as a truck driver, but Jeete desires to be a film hero. Their happy life takes a drastic turn when Lieutenant Colonel Devendra Rawat (Gaurav Chopra) asks Tara to help him deploy his truck to send immediate ammunition to the border where Indian soldiers were fighting Pakistani soldiers. Tara Singh along with 6 other soldiers disappeared who were assumed to be captured by the Pakistani army.
Jeete Aka Charantjit Singh portrayed by Utkarsh Sharma takes the responsibility on himself to bring back his father alive from Pakistan Jail. With the help of family friends on the other side of the border Jeete reaches Pakistan and sets out to rescue his father. But the rescue of his Papaji in Pakistan turns ugly when Jeete himself gets captured by the Army, later rescued by Papaji Tara Singh in a very Gadarish style. The reunite of the father-son duo did not end there but dragged on to bring some of the best actions of Sunny Deol plugging Jeete transformation from sweet innocent collage boy to rough and tough bearded son of Tara Singh who can pack a punch.
90’s style masala Patriotic film Gadar 2 does not leave much of an impact except Sunny Deol as an action hero with mammoth power on screen which make the watch entertaining. The typical punching over the top action of Sunny Deol the fans have been missing is back with a bang in the film. And he did not disappoint his fans of Gadar 2. The innocent truck driver still packs a punch with a fury swag.
Director Anil Sharma smartly plugged the Gadar rushes and two song “Udja Kaale Kaav” and “Main Nikla Gaddi Le ke” brings nostalgia on screen of the film and its more entertaining than the fresh content in the story. The Sakina Ameesha Patel did not get much of a screen space to showcase her talent as her character got no meat in the writing. She was used by the makers only to create nostalgia of old Gadar and throughout the film she was just running on the road to express her helplessness and anguish on the sad news of the plot.
The film tried to re-launch Utkarsh Sharma after his failed attempt in 2018 film Genius. He was decent in his performance with his innocent face but could not hold ground against his papaji in the film and rather appeared weak. We would say it’s not his fault but the aura of Sunny Deol is too big for any newcomer like him. Utkarsh’s love interest in Pakistan Muskaan (Simrat Kaur) did leave her mark as a debutant with her innocent, naughty yet fragile girl performance. The villain of the film played by Manish Wadhwa did his job with honesty. Gaurav Chopra with his guest role leaves an impact. But the rest of the character is badly written and forgetful.
Two hours fifty minutes long, Gadar 2 could have been shorter. The plot where Sunny Deol’s character Tara Singh goes missing and Utkarsh Sharma takes the lead on the screen felt like a lost cause to the audience who were terribly missing Sunny Deol.
The takeaway of the film is the two recreated song of the old film “Udja Kale Kava”, “Main Mikla Gaddi leke” and whistle worthy chest thumping moment of Sunny Paaji in the film. That make the film Paisa Wasool.
So, if you are die-hard fan of action hero Sunny Deol and Gadar 2. The film is for you. You will enjoy it. Let us know in the comment section what you think of the film.
